Thai in the city

It all began when a good friend visited us from Thailand.  We thought oh we could be good considerate hosts and take her too a Thai place and have some real Thai food.  As we started to look around, we then realised… real Thai food, heh?  In Vienna you say?  Hmmm…

Challenge accepted!

We started asking for recommendations from our friends (a.k.a. fellow under-cover food detectives, yes we are everywhere), shot-listed a few likely suspects and finally decided for Aroi Thai.  And here’s our take…

The yummilicious Gua Tiao Tomyam Soup

and the mega spicy hot but seriously gorgeous Crispy duck curry (Gaeng Bet Ped Yaan)

About Aroi Thai
A small-ish family-run restaurant owned by husband and wife.  She is Thai – this explains the quality in terms of taste (and spiciness – if you don’t believe us, ask Nicklas!)  Very kind and hospitable, and good news!  They are open everyday and till late – except Sundays where they open only from 1600hrs onwards.  Oh yes, we tested with saying till very late and they were so patient and hospitable with us.  Try that at other restaurants and you will be reminded “nicely”.  And yes, worth checking before coming.  As they are family owned, they might also close the operation when they need to visit Thailand.  In general, we are both very happy with this place and it is one of our favorites.

  • Total overall rating: 4.2 / 5
  • Ambience: 3 / 5,  Clean, friendly, humble and very welcoming.
  • Location: 4 / 5.
  • Food: 4 / 5,  It has the right balance in the taste and ingredients used.  It feels like good home-cooked meals and that is very nice.  Serving size is generous and a good portion. Although, I'd consider it rather mild and yes you can ask to pimp up the spicy / hot level and Nicklas did that.
  • Price: 5 / 5.
  • Service: 5 / 5,  Oh my god, this thing exists here!

  • Ambience: 3 / 5.
  • Location: 4 / 5,  I'ts easy enough to get here with the U-bahn it is also hidden enough so that all the tourists can't find it. Hidden gem!  Score!!!
  • Food: 5 / 5Perfectly balanced taste and if you ask, they can make it as spicy as you want without it being overpowering.
  • Price: 5 / 5,  For the quality of the food, it's really nicely priced!
  • Service: 5 / 5,  Extremely good service and they are genuinely welcoming and take good care of you at the restaurant.
